v0.3 Update: It's a Game!

The v0.3 Update is finally here!

It only took about... a month longer than expected. Originally I would have called this the 'LevelUpdate' in honour of the event at which the unreleased build was shown off, but I ran into some snags around creating save data. One thing led to another, and I ended up with a bunch of features I didn't expect to add and yet lacked a few things promised. There's no changes to enemy AI yet and I discovered a few new bugs, so expect those to be fixed soon-ish. I've got some work to do in order to wrap up my Master's Degree, first and foremost.

If you want to check out the roadmap and haven't already, it's on the main page!

Without further ado, here's the changelog:

Major Features:

  • Game Mode: Zen
    • The game that already was, but with a fresh coat of paint! Climb as high as you can before your health reaches zero.
  • Game Mode: Score Attack
    • This is where the real challenge is. Set a countdown timer for 5, 10 or 15 minutes and get as much score as you can before the clock runs out!
  • High Score System
    • Score is currently recorded the same way for all modes:
      • 1 point for defeating an enemy.
      • 3 points (or potentially more!) for defeating an enemy with an exceptional word.
      • 3 points for warping to a new floor.
    • High Scores are currently only viewable after you've entered one.
  • Near-Full Touch Compatibility
    • All that's left is to add a virtual keyboard for the few times where you need to type words. Expect that in the next update!
    • Click-to-Move
      • You can click in the direction you want to move instead of needing to use the keyboard! It can be a little bit finicky, but mostly works fine.
    • Actual Pause Button
      • You can click in the top-left corner of the screen to pause the game now. Revolutionary, I know!
  • Seed Entry
    • You can enter a sequence of 8 alphanumeric characters (letters or numbers) to ensure your game generates the same way every time!
    • You can see your current seed whenever the game is paused.
  • Game Over Screen
    • Added the ability to return to main menu or quit the application from there.
  • HUD Always On Toggle
    • I suppose it should have been obvious that people would want to see their stats at all times, huh?
    • Currently this is only possible on the main menu and does not persistently save, which will be fixed in v0.3.1.
  • New Music
    • Paul decided it was high time the game got a proper music track (his words, not mine!) and made an awesome new piece of background music for the game proper.

The Rest:

  • Added a level transition wipe.
  • Entities now face their attack targets.
  • The HUD is now either on or off instead of peeking into the screen.
